Five Chocolate-y Things To Do In Britain

July 6, 2005 - fans of candy, chocolate factories and master chocolatiers need look no further than britain for a mouth-watering vacation. visitbritain, the national tourist office for england, scotland and wales, suggests five chocolate-y things to do which don’t require a golden ticket!

one of the world’s most popular chocolate-y children’s books, ‘charlie and the chocolate factory’, was written by roald dahl who lived in the english county of buckinghamshire. a new museum - the roald dahl museum and story centre - devoted to the author has opened in his home village, 30 miles north-west of london, and features manuscripts, letters and treasured possessions providing insight into his life. once inside the museum’s ‘chocolate doors’ (complete with chocolate aroma), visitors can use interactive displays and see a representation of dahl’s writing hut and its contents standing in an ‘orchard’ made of giant versions of quentin blake’s illustrations.

also in england, visitors should head to cadbury world located just outside the city of birmingham. chocolate fans of all ages will love the 3-d movie which features ‘flex6’, a robot, who explains the making and packing of the candy, as well as a revamped demonstration area with plenty of hands-on action and the chance to sample ‘liquid chocolate’. take a walk through the aztec forest to see how chocolate was discovered, and end a visit in the world’s largest cadbury shop where souvenirs such as cadbury dairy milk bars, which celebrate their 100th anniversary this year, can be purchased to bring home.

visitors to the isle of arran in scotland, can follow the isle of arran taste trail which includes the opportunity to visit arran chocolate factory and shop. with an extensive range of chocolates - which include champagne and ginger flavors, and milk chocolate with lemon zest filling - delicious samples can be tasted whilst watching the chocolate makers weave their magic. the isle of arran, is just off the west coast of scotland, offering mountains in the north and rolling downland in the south of the 25-mile long, oval-shaped island which can be reached by ferry.

in wales, the welsh chocolate farm is where visitors can see pemberton’s hand-made welsh chocolates being made on conducted factory tours, and they can stroll the narrow streets of the model village and watch chocolate craft in action. the cocoa bean café offers a variety of drinks and cakes as well as savory delights - perhaps welcome refreshment after attending a chocolate workshop or the chocolate cinema in this chocolate-lovers- paradise.

visitors to london can plan their own ‘london chocolate trail’ to take in many of the capital’s famous shops and master chocolatiers. perhaps a tour should start at charbonnel et walker, a company established in 1875 as one of britain’s earliest producers of chocolates with their original shop still open today at 173 new bond street in mayfair. rococo chocolate is a more recent addition, founded in 1983 by chatal coady who has also written two books about chocolate and founded the chocolate society: her shop is at 321 kings road in chelsea. the chocolate society has a shop at 36 elizabeth street where they also have a café, making their own chocolate brownies, ice cream and milk shakes. chocoholics will also want to check out the exquisite range of chocolates offered at department stores such as harrods, selfridges and fortnum & mason.
